Four Barrow Paintings was written in June of 2026 for the Off the Dock Chamber Festival. Writing the piece was a wonderful opportunity to get to know the work of John D. Barrow, and to express my own similar appreciation for the beautiful landscape of the Skaneateles, NY area. In deciding on this particular set of four works by Barrow, I noticed a pattern. Especially in his depictions of scenes in nature, Barrow has a wonderful ability to subtly personify the subjects in his paintings. Whether they are trees, cows, or rolling hills, he brings out vivid characters and drama in these scenes - making them relatable, making them human. I think that is just one element that makes his work so compelling. Therefore, my goal with this piece was to demonstrate this humanization of nature in a musical medium. Asking the question, how is humanity reflected in how we observe and interact with the natural world? A question I found myself asking as I observed these particular paintings.
We begin with the optimism of farmers working a field in On Otisco Lake, an overt example of people interacting with the natural world, and then bring that perspective to three scenes of nature - all focused around the humanized drama of trees. In Primeval Hemlocks we observe a dark warning - one that we may not be able to fully grasp. In Study of Ivy and Trees, we watch a terrible struggle unfold - undeniably beautiful, yet haunting. Finally, in The Falling Monarch, we witness a funeral procession in the forest, solemn and regal, but reminiscent of the optimism we heard in the opening movement. The fall makes way for new rises.
