Casting Stones was written in the summer of 2025 for Matt Caputy. The piece is inspired by the imagery of casting stones across a still pond, drawing a metaphor from the resulting ripples to impacts on a person's psyche.
In the music, many waterlike textures are explored. From the ripples set off by skipping stones, and the gentle flowing of a creek, to the torrential current of a river and crashing waves of an ocean. While the structure as a whole is largely improvisatory, it follows a general trend of increasing intensity and magnitude. A recurring motif is heard throughout which is twisted and augmented throughout the piece, demonstrating a difficult but inevitable transformation.
The every day interactions we have with each other, even small moments in time, can have a massive impact downstream. Small ripples can compound into surging ocean waves, and a person can radically change for better or for worse.
